Indeed Kofi Kinaata Is A ‘Fante Yaa Pono’ – Wanlov The Kubolor

I am obsessed with the beaches of Ghana’s western coast. Most are just west of Takoradi, one of Ghana’s biggest cities, now self-proclaimed the O.C.—Oil City. Late last year, as I once again passed through Takoradi on my way to one of the area’s beautiful beaches, I told myself I should really build more ties in Tadi, to justify—or better yet multiply—my trips out west.

I asked Wanlov if he was aware of anything popping in Takoradi. The first name he shared was Kofi Kinaata. As soon as I heard Kinaata’s “Wonky3 Ghana,” I knew I had to at least interview him. Getting a hold of him was a different story, and I never even spoke to him until just recently. After several failed attempts last year, I let the idea sit. Meanwhile Kinaata moved to Accra to work with Samini and his Highgrade team, and the name Kinaata is no longer confined to the Western Region.

Kinaata first came out of his shell in 2008, when he rose to the top of a hip-hop competition held on the Kasahari show by Takoradi’s Melody FM. “Many thought I was going to win, but in the end I was first runner up. I was just a kid, At the time I had only been rapping for months, there was no room for me then.”

But Kinaata’s talent forced Takoradi to make room for him. In 2010, Kofi completed high school, after which he managed to devote more time to music. “I started rapping more, studio works, on rap battles. I performed at schools and fairs. All the students knew me, they really wanted me.”

Kinaata raps in Fante, the Akan language of the coastal Fante people. It’s close to twi, which means it can be understood by a majority of people throughout Ghana. Wanlov tells me Kinaata is “a Fante Yaa Pono,” a serious compliment when you know Pono is Kubolor’s favorite twi rapper. “He is wise, [uses] lots of poetry, he’s very lyrical, witty. He pulls from everything from astrology to food.” I also asked Kofi how he describes his own raps. “I say the unthinkable, what you cannot even imagine. I believe in punchlines, [I give] universal advice, nothing profane. At the end of the day, when you listen to me you have to laugh.”

Alas, my own Fanti sucks, so I am missing out on practically everything Kinaata raps about. But his flow keeps me interested, as do some of the Takoradi beats he’s used. Now that he is based in Accra, Kofi is working mainly with Accra producers, including top dawgs such as Appietus, Ball J, Dr Ray & Cash 2 and Magnom. However I have chosen to feature one of his earlier works, which in my mind are what set him clearly apart, a combination of his smooth, precise flow with futuristic, minimal beats.

A good example of this is the song “Onnyi Chorus”—no chorus, produced by Willis. In Takoradi, Kinaata also worked with Elorm, Still Vybez and Oil City Vybez, all dope producers well worth checking out. Their sound is at least as good, if not better than what I hear coming out of studios in Accra. Clearly there is decent gear out west, and a decent work flow for these beatmakers. For all the drama oil causes everywhere it goes, in Takoradi it seems to be fueling a wave of extra dope hip-hop: only in Ghana can people turn a fossil fuel into renewable energy. More vim Tadi.

LYRICS: Manifest – Someway Bi (Prod. Yung Fly) [Radio Edit]

[Intro: M.anifest]

Driving in a storm, how I fit see ahead

Weather forecast, a bit nippy I heard

Beggars can't choose, but be picky instead

9 to 5 blues, kick me I’m dead

[Verse 1: M.anifest]

Cross my T's and dot my I's

Stress wey e dey my chest I ostracize

Do atwe atwe burn rubber till you smell the tyres

Me and adwen b ayɛ aka, I’m cutting ties

My Jalabia tailor made or customized

My English straight pidgin all bastardized

What I for do? Ignore all the bastard guys

I work they snore, I pass those guys

Thank God it's Friday, Of course! My mind dey

Rise and shine your eye, hustler’s way

All week long we hustle and slave

Trapped in enclaves for wages and pay

Koko king in the morning, ensure that vim dey

Weekend so strong helps to shun the weak days

Mommy say; “son, well God be praised,”

Well these days money be why we dey, someway

I bathe in faith, no bathing apes, a basic case

Of faith in something great, but still

From 6 to 6, with stones and bricks

I’m building a future I hope I live to see and shit

[Hook: M.anifest]

Up early no sleep, e be someway bi

Boys abrɛ all week e be someway bi

Price of living no be cheap, e be someway bi

But thank god it's Friday, me bɛ gye me ni

Dum sɔ dum sɔ, e be someway bi

Ewia bɔ nsuo tɔ, e be someway bi

My woman bore, wa doggi me, e be someway bi

But thank God it's Friday, me bɛ gye me ni

[Verse 2: M.anifest]

My eye get, me ni agyi

During the week I’m busy, me nni adaagye

But I still put in work sake of daakye

I’m even up before the sun says maakye

So it's 5 on Friday ɛneɛ akye

Me kɔ verbs akɔ akotwa me nan ase

Health is wealth, I give thanks, medaase

Might use my widow's mite to buy asase

Waa wo nim sɛ

Hustle no dey nap hustle no dey sleep

Hustle no dey slack e mek wild on the streets

Hustle no dey vex or stress about beef

R.I.P laziness lay a wreath

Dance with the struggle got a million needs

We've been up in here long like Brazilian weaves

Wanna weekdays filled with our brilliant deeds

Weekends we can enjoy what resilience breeds

I bathe in faith not based with snakes

A basic case of me and fake no dey relate

From 6 to 6, with stones and bricks

Build a future, risque, Sharon Stone in flicks

[Hook: M.anifest]

[Bridge: M.anifest]

Bɔga ma yɛ merɛ

Girls abrɛ e no be boys pɛ

Thank God it’s Friday

Bɔga ma yɛ merɛ

Girls abrɛ e no be boys pɛ

Thank God it’s Fiada

[Post Bridge: M.anifest]

Driving in a storm I can't see shit

All week long sink or swim that's it

Staring at the clock does it move does it tick?

Time moves slowest when you need it to be quick

Driving in a storm how I fit see ahead

Weather forecast a bit nippy I heard

Beggars can't choose but be picky instead

9 to 5 blues kick me I’m dead

Driving in a storm how I fit see ahead

Weather forecast a bit nippy I heard

Beggars can't choose but be picky instead

9 to 5 blues kick me I’m dead

Blakk Rasta Apologies To Wanlov Kubolor And His Fans After Slapping Him

Fearless and outspoken Radio presenter Blakk Rasta host of Hitz FM’s “Taxi Driver” mid-morning show has apologized publicly for physically assaulting rapper Wanlov Kubolor.

The interesting episode unfolded on Peace FM’s “Entertainment Review” last Saturday when both parties told their side of the unfortunate incident after which they both gracefully apologized to each other.

Narrating what happened, Wanlov stated that he went for an interview last Thursday October 24, 2013 on Hitz FM Drive Time hosted by Kwame B and while he was waiting he (Wanlov) was standing outside the offices of Multimedia having a chat with Radio Presenter Doreen Andoh when Blakk Rasta came from nowhere to confront him about a long running social media battle between them.

According to him, Blakk Rasta asked him why he insulted his mother some months back in a YouTube video. Even though according to Wanlov he didn’t remember insulting Blakk Rasta’s mother he told Blakk Rasta to apologize for calling him a cocaine user on Adom FM among other negative things before he would also apologize to him in return.

Wanlov continued that they had some sort of verbal exchanges and tensions were rising so Doreen Andoh tried to intervene and he turned to Doreen to listen to what she was saying and Blakk Rasta slapped him in the face.

Wanlov admitted he also threw some punches and scratched Blakk Rasta face until on lookers came to the scene to separate them.

On his part Blakk Rasta confirmed the incident and accepted responsibility for first slapping Wanlov, but explained that he lost his temper after extreme consistent provocation and vulgar insults on his parents from Wanlov.

“I slapped him, I’m not going to lie about it, I am not happy about it, I am not proud about it and I am very apologetic about it to the fans and everybody because Blakk Rasta has never been violent person.”

Wanlov also explained that it was rather Blakk Rasta who provoked him and that he did not expect the assault from the radio presenter. After several exchanges between the two live on radio, the situation was getting out of hand with threats of court and gang attacks setting in until Kwasi Aboagye, host of Peace Fm’s Entertainment Review, did a wonderful job by getting the two to apologize to each other and make peace on his live radio show.

They both complained having bruises on their body and are both seeking medical attention after the fight.

However, Wanlov has reported the incident to the Nima Police station that is yet to invite Blakk Rasta for questioning.

After they both apologized to each other on Saturday one would have thought that everything had been settled between the two dread locks men but we woke up on Monday to see along letter written by Wanlov to Blakk Rasta revealing a number of allegations against Blakk Rasta.
